From childhood, we’ve been conditioned to celebrate the achievements of masked crusaders. Zorro, Batman, or Catwoman, we always find the men and women behind masks worthy of adulation and cheer.

What about your everyday hero or heroine? The mother who wakes up before her entire family to ensure they have food to eat? Or the helpful neighbour who offers a glass of fresh water when you visit them or the little girl who helps a blind person cross the street?

Why are these everyday acts of kindness so underrated? Why do we still go for the mystique and allure of men and women behind masks? It’s probably due to our obsession with mystery and intrigue. A Venetian mask or a superhero one always gets the vote doesn’t it? And even in fancy dress competitions, we want to go as wonder woman or catwoman, not ourselves.

Maybe it’s time to shed all the masks and like nirvana sang, “Come, as you are!’
