Four Tips to Make Your Wardrobe Sustainable

Seasons come, and seasons go, but sustainable fashion allows us to get the most out of our wardrobe. I share four ‘tips’ that I draw from experience to maintain a sustainable wardrobe.

  1. Wear fabrics that allow your skin to breathe—100 % cotton, linen, etc. I enjoy cotton clothes since I live in Chennai, which is hot all year round. My mother, who has lived in Delhi, believes in segregating her clothes according to the seasons, especially summer and winter.
  2. Buy the basics – solid colors, blacks, whites, beiges – this will enable you to mix and match. You can team up floral kurtas with white salwars. Avoid skin-tight pants if you are overweight.
  3. Be choosy – Buy only those clothes that “spark joy.” As Marie Kondo says, it is good to surround yourself with the things you love. ( paraphrased)
  4. Wear suitable clothes for spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each season demands a distinct set of clothes. Be a woman for all seasons!

  1. Wearing airy clothes is one habit that I follow irrespective of season. I go to the extent of ditching the fashion parade for breathable clothes

    1. Hi Geethica, It took me years to realize that I would never wear all those branded clothes made of synthetic material. For the past few years, I’ve only been wearing cotton.
