“If music be the food of love, then play on’, said Shakespeare and centuries later, Samantha Fox in one of her songs.
If I had a rupee for every time music saved my soul and kept me alive, I’d be a millionaire. I love all kinds of music. Pop, slow rock, alternative music, Tamil dabbanguthu, Bollywood hits – the works.
Back when I worked with Cognizant Academy, I was one of those girls with a tiny MP3 player, which I used to listen to songs at work. Somehow, it did not distract me. It enhanced my concentration as I edited those e-learning courses. Circa 2005, at home, I used to blast music on the 5-CD changer my dad had bought us. I had the best time playing all kinds of hit songs.
My friend used to come home and give me CDs for which I used to pay him INR 250. My mom would go to Basement Blues, which they said A. R. Rahman used to frequent. We have got a zillion CDs in our collection. Also, an equal number of cassettes.
Now technology has advanced so much that we stream music from spotify or youtube. There’s indie music too. And platforms for indie music. I love soundcloud and I have worked with iapploud as their social media person in 2014. I had the best time ever.
For a while in between, I did not listen to much music. I became like the guy in ‘The Sound of Music’ who needed someone to reintroduce it in his life.
Nowadays, I listen sparingly. I still miss my CD player and cassette player. They were the best!
