What I learned today from my dad

My dad was mentioning that the neighbour’s handymen had not set up their clothesline stand properly and that it was tilting to one side. He then told me about plumb lines.

If you’ve read the Tintin comics, you would remember Professor Calculus, who was always seen with a pendulum. Well, that’s a plumb line, and this term is usually used in masonry.

Another term I learned is spirit level, and that refers to checking the surface levels in bricklaying and carpentry. My dad regrets that these practices are on the wane.

I hope you learned something new from reading this post.

  1. I have watched with some curiosity how the labourers use the plumb line and the spirit line. I have no practical sense to comprehend things like this. But thanks for addidng the two lines to my vocabulary.
