I often remember The Apprentice and POTUS Donald Trump saying ‘You’re fired’! I used to watch that show regularly back when it aired on TV. It was quite nerve-wracking to be fired on TV in front of millions of viewers. I always empathized with those who had been fired over a group task.
My father has worked in a single company his whole life, after which he set up his own firm, dissolved it, and now works as a tire and rubber consultant at age 78.
Me, on the other hand – hmmmm.
A friend once joked that A changes her job as often as she changes her underwear. The only feeble retort I had was ‘ Guys I change my underwear more than once a day.’
The reasons why my jobs ended weren’t always ( or ever) crystal clear to me. I would be laid off although according to me I wasn’t the worst employee on that team. Trust me on this!
I once told my boss when I was getting laid off, ” Seriously, you think I’m the worst employee out here? Do you really believe that deep down?”
Now I know that she was given a poor rating and she had to transfer that to me. She was a writer too. So am I. As we all know, writers take around 10 years to get over some trauma ( minimum).
I wanted to be angry but I couldn’t. I understood her. She understood me. We were both victims of the system.
I’ve been straight up accused of having a victim mentality by more than one person. And once in a professional setting. I guess I have owned that and admitted I’m a victim. But today, with policies in the job market becoming clearer what with the economy getting worse, people are beginning to understand that I’m not such a BIG LOSER after all. I count for something. Just because I didn’t understand corporate doublespeak doesn’t mean I’m a ninny.
So if you have been laid off, remember, they call it “corporate restructuring”.
And keep your chin up!
