Back when I worked with Flipkart, I used to get bored ‘coz I got only 4 lines to edit per day. If I got work it was highly unfulfilling content. So the INR 80000 they paid me meant squat ‘coz I was next door drinking breezers or buying neon nail polish to make sure I did not die of boredom.
As we grow older and wiser, we rise in Maslow’s pyramid ( hierarchy of needs) We want more from our work. We want it to fulfill us and nourish our soul.
We are driven less by money and more by fulfilling work.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory that describes five levels of human needs that motivate behavior. The levels are physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. The theory is often depicted as a pyramid.
Level | Description |
---|---|
Physiological | Basic needs for survival, like food, water, shelter, and sleep |
Safety | Needs for security and safety, like physical safety, employment, and health |
Love and belonging | Needs for connection and acceptance, like friendship, family, and intimacy |
Esteem | Needs for self-worth and respect, like confidence, status, and recognition |
Self-actualization | The desire to become the best that one can be |
Maslow’s hierarchy is a useful tool for understanding human motivation and behavior. It can help explain why people behave the way they do, and how to design systems and programs that meet people’s needs.
Maslow’s theory was originally presented in 1943 in his book A Theory of Human Motivation. Later expansions added cognitive, aesthetic, and transcendence needs.
