I used to do a lot of fun things on my birthday as a child growing up in 80s Madras. At school, we were allowed to wear ‘colored clothes’ on our birthday. My mom would pick out a lovely dress for me from Saney’s or Surya or a similar store. I especially remember a beautiful blue frock with lovely lace. It was so pretty.
We would get to stand in the school auditorium and be wished a happy birthday by the whole school. I always made sure I took Eclair’s chocolates for my fellow classmates. We were made to feel special.
At home, my parents would allow me to organize a birthday party. I would get together with my childhood friends and we would put up performances for the guests. This was done in Y-4, Anna Nagar, a house that no longer exists. It sure exists in our minds and hearts though.
Our house help would take care of the guests and my friends from school and the neighborhood would be invited. We would organize party games like treasure hunt etc. for the guests.
We would dance to film songs and the guests would view us through a space in the wall intended for a shelf.
We had the best time ever. After that, grown-up birthdays seem lame.
I’m a Piscean, and I’m happy that Blogchatter, the brand, is also a Piscean. Blogchatter’s birthday is on 9th March, and it only seems fitting that they are wonderful creative partners. There is definitely something to sun signs and astrology, methinks!
