Book Review by K.S.Loganathan
Syou Ishida is a writer and a cat lover. In this book, she writes about the therapeutic effects of cats on their custodians and how they transform the atmosphere and leave an impression on the families. There is a hard- to- find clinic in Kyoto named ‘ Nakogya Kokoru Clinic for the Soul’ to which people from all walks of life go with their mental problems through word- of- mouth recommendations. The doctor and his nurse with feline features do not medicate the patients, but instead prescribe different types of cats to each for temporary petcare .
It is interesting to note the diversity in cat personalities and behaviour. There are five case studies in the book of patients with complaints of insomnia, family discord, loneliness, intolerance, depression and anxiety arising from work pressures and interpersonal relationships .
The patients get to confront their inner struggles as the feline companions guide them on the path of recovery by simply being themselves. Elements of magical realism are embroidered into the stories . There are numerous cat illustrations that embellish the story telling.
A sequel will be released next year. Overall this is a book to be enjoyed by cat lovers of all ages
