Summary /Teaser

Ritu lived with her mother on Henry Island in West Bengal. On weekends, Ritu was a part of the Secret Songsters, a group of children who mimicked birdcalls. Ritu’s mother was a cook in the kitchen of the guest house that Manager Babu ran.

Whenever tourists came over, the children would mimic birds so that the tourists thought the island was filled with birds. Somya was Ritu’s pesky neighbor, who often bullied Ritu. She was mocking Ritu for her voice and inability to mimic any bird.

What happens when a boy named Anik hears an ostrich on the island and his parents explore the island in search of the perfect selfie?

What children can learn from this book

Young readers will learn about birds, birding, the names of some popular birds, trapping of birds, ecology, and nature conservation in a story that is simple, humorous, and enjoyable. I suggest that parents buy the paperback version of the book due to the beautiful illustrations and engaging nature of the story.
