Aishwariya Laxmi’s Birds of Paradise explores the themes of identity, nostalgia, love, loss, resilience, and the passage of time. Despite being deeply personal, the poems are universally relatable, reflecting on the life experiences, observations, and inner struggles. The intensity captures the beauty of fleeting happiness and the pain of heartbreak. Where “To All the Girls I've Been” traces personal evolution through different stages of life, the poems like “Panic Attacks” and “Mending a Broken Heart” talk about mental health and emotional turmoil. I find the everyday moments, historical and literary references in her work woven beautifully. The imagery is vivid. The flow is not minimalist like most contemporary poets, and has a charm of a rhythmic beat, reminiscent of classic poetries. It is a lovely and interesting read for poetry lovers who appreciate introspective and evocative writing.
