Global warming, sustainability, and the future of humanity.
The book is by Chetan Singh Solanki
Chetan Singh Solanki is a solar scientist, climate yogi, and former professor at IIT Bombay. He is also known as Solar Man and Solar Gandhi.
This book was born from an ongoing journey – an eleven-year-long Energy Swaraj Yatra travelling across towns, cities, and villages to spread awareness of climate change. In this book, an attempt is made to move away from bigness and move towards simplicity.
There are six parts to this book.
Part 1 – The foundations of our predicament
Part 2 – The energy swaraj yatra
Part 3 – Understanding climate change
Part 4 – The path forward
Part 5 – TUPEE climate habits- 5 powerful actions for climate correction.
Part 6 – Two roads to 2100
The author discusses climate tipping points after moving through renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. He describes the signs of a planet on the brink. He touches upon the 1.5 degrees c and 2 degrees c global warming thresholds. Why every fraction of a degree matters. He quotes from 2023 reports on climate change.
The author outlines how the world is likely to look in 2035, 2050, 2075 or 2100. He talks about extreme weather and climate instability.
He talks about cooking, praying, and living sustainably. He also writes about why policy, technology, and growth are failing us and why governments cannot solve climate change.
He introduces Solanki’s first law of sustainability, which limits consumption. Solanki’s second law of sustainability – localising production.
He shares some additional lessons on sustainability from his own life and about reducing the use of single-use plastics.
