I’m from Chennai – the city of Idly, Dosa, Sambar, and Chutney. Barring a few days, I’ve had idly for breakfast almost every day in the last seven years. Sometimes, it has been with sambar, sometimes with podi, sometimes with pickle, and sometimes with chutney. I’ve even had it with white sugar.
Idly is the easiest meal to make, provided you have the batter ready. It just has to be put into its mold and steamed for about 10-15 minutes, that’s all. Due to the ease in making it, my mom, dad, and I – all three of us know how to make it and have taken turns making it for breakfast.
Some outlets in Chennai are famous for their idly; for instance, the various branches of Murugan Idli Kadai. I’ve been to their T-Nagar branch and their Besant Nagar branch with friends and family.
When I worked with a corporate in Hyderabad, the employees of that company from Chennai used to rave about kaiyendhi bhavans in Chennai. Although I haven’t been to those, I’ve heard of them all right.
I even remember a meme made about Aishwarya Rai in relation to idlies. How has the ubiquitous idly played a role in your life?
