My childhood memories of Diwali involve getting up at 4 am. Dad and I would wear our new clothes after the ‘Ganga Snan,’ step into our verandah in Y-block, Anna Nagar, and burst crackers. I would burst those Bijlee crackers (small ‘bombs’) that came in a small packet of a hundred, three weeks before Diwali. I used a long 18-inch ‘agarbatti’ to light these ‘bombs.’ Closer to Diwali day, we would burst flower pots, ground chakras, ‘snakes’, ‘wire’, ‘sparklers, etc. Dad would be the one to place the ‘rocket’ in the bottle on the terrace and set it flying. This was in the 80s when life was simple and good.
